The SMAP mission is moving forward with plans to address specific mission requirements including science product specifications, algorithm development, and data production and distribution to the science and applications communities. Science data calibration & validation (Cal/Val) plays a critical role in ensuring that high quality data products are generated and archived for science purposes. A project Cal/Val Plan is being developed for the project that addresses both pre- and post-launch requirements identified by the SMAP project and Science Definition Team (SDT). Community participation and contributions to the Cal/Val Working Group (CVWG) will help shape the plan and resolve problems that are identified. Some aspects of SMAP Cal/Val are unique to SMAP while others may be enhanced through coordination with other satellite mission Cal/Val programs, for example those of SMOS and GCOM-W. The CVWG will therefore attempt to engage and leverage these other resources. Elements of the Cal/Val Plan will include in situ, tower and aircraft simulators, satellite observations, model and surrogate variables, and field campaigns. Project resources are limited however, and therefore must be used judiciously. CVWG activities will be carried out mainly through emails and telecons. The CVWG will also take advantage of member attendance at conferences such as AGU and IGARSS, to meet in person when possible. There are two near-term goals for the CVWG, namely (1) to conduct a workshop during the summer of 2009, and (2) to develop the SMAP Cal/Val Plan. 1st SMAP Cal/Val Workshop
A SMAP Algorithms and Cal/Val Workshop was held June 9-11, 2009, in Oxnard, CA. This workshop was organized jointly by the SMAP Calibration & Validation Working Group (CVWG) and the SMAP Algorithm Working Group (AWG).
