Meetings & Workshops
3rd Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop, New York, NY
Date:September 20, 2016 - September 21, 2016
This workshop is a continuation of the first two soil moisture validation and application workshops held at the European Space Agency in Frascati, Italy, in 2013 and at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2014. The objective of this workshop series is to discuss and reconcile methodological advances in the validation and application of global satellite soil moisture data. The workshop is unique in that it brings together satellite soil moisture users and developers to focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture data from both passive and active microwave satellite missions (SMAP, SMOS, ASCAT, AMSR-2, Sentinel-1, and other legacy missions).
The workshop will deal with the following (research) questions:
- What is the quality of the current satellite products and what can we expect in the near future?
- Who is using satellite soil moisture data and for what purpose?
- What are the best practices in validating soil moisture products?
- What are the main limitations of satellite soil moisture data from a user’s perspective?
- What is the future of satellite-based soil moisture remote sensing?
The following themes will be addressed during the workshop: Current and future satellite missions, satellite soil moisture products: status and algorithm development, spatial and temporal satellite validation, data assimilation, hydrological applications, land-atmosphere processes, climate studies, and socio-economic impact studies.
The workshop is open to all. There are no fees for attendance but you must register. If you wish to make a presentation you must submit an abstract with your registration. Abstracts will be evaluated for inclusion as either oral or poster presentations.
Please note that this workshop will follow a SMAP Cal/Val Workshop September 19-20, 2016 that will be held in Manhattan and is open to all that are interested in SMAP. Information on that workshop can be found here.
